India’s First Care Home for Children Living with HIV
Achieved :
- First care home exclusively for aids orphans in India
- Served 320 children
- Excellent Public Private Partnership
- Longevity increased – vertical transmission is 33 years
- Quality of life improved
- Had sent 65 children on adoption
- Graduated 4 engineers
- Graduated one aeronautical engineer
- Graduated one chartered accountant
- Graduated three graduate nurses
- Produced 20 undergraduates
- 15 students who chose vocational skill training have got jobs
- A girl got in to LIMCA book of records
- 180 children reintegrated back to community
- 24 graduated students of Anandha Illam got married and settled.

Thooli
Caring for Children Affected by AIDS – A Community Model
Achieved :
- The adult PLHA centric Home Based Care Program in Chennai was changed as a child focused Home Based care program for children infected, affected and vulnerable to AIDS in Chennai.
- Reached 1573 OVC of which 700 had both parents positive
- Trained local SHG women to care for a terminally ill woman
- Brought out 10 training manuals to train caregivers, counselors, doctors, NGOS, peer groups.
- Conducted need-based research for UNICEF, TANSACS, FHI-USAID, Futures group for NACPIV.
- Joined hands with BOSTON university and taken up research on impact of PROJECT THOOLI over last 5 years
- Later another child focused Home-Based care program for children was started at Nammakkal districts partnering with a local NGO.
Vellicham
Spreading Light through HIV Awareness
Achieved :
- Created awareness about HIV and AIDS at 100 slums in Chennai city
- Reached directly and indirectly 10,00,000 population
- Developed peer groups among youth
- Effectiveness of project was well proved by many who raised doubts
- Program was effective as many raised doubts and wanted HIV test
- Linked with STI CLINIC GGH to refer clients for testing.
Vidiyal
The First Home-Based Care Model in Chennai
Achieved :
- CHES designed the first Home Based Care Program in Chennai
- Reached 500 families in Chennai
- In 1995 CHES appointed PLHA as staffs for the 1st time in the country
Pathukappu
Care with Compassion at Government Hospitals
Achieved :
- Counseling services provided at Govt Hospital for Thoracic Medicine
- Of the 4 counselors placed 2 were rehabilitated PLHA weaned from IV Drug use.
- Daily counseling was provided to more than 100 people and over a year project reached more than 35000 people who came for pre and posttest and for medical management of HIV and AIDS.
Nanban
Dignity, Visibility, and Rights for TG and MSM Communities
Achieved :
- Interacted with 1000 Male Sex Workers And Transgenders
- Conducted legendry beauty contest for TG AND MSM
- Collector of Villupuram gifted 2 cent of land free of cost to 22 TRANSGENDERS belonging to Villupuram
- Created a CBO for transgenders called THAA in1999
Thozhi
Empowering Women, Transforming Health
Achieved :
- Intervention among Female Sex Worker
- Interacted with 5000 sex workers in Chennai city
- Had screened 1500 Female Sex Workers for STI
- Used play-way methods to educate women about HIV transmission
- Created an excellent peer educator model
- Raised condom usage from 7% to 95%
- Project focused overall behaviour change
- Created a CBO called JANSIRANI MAGALIR MUNETRA SANGAM.
- Created a cubicle for STI clinic at Tiruvallur district.
Malargal
Healing Young Minds After the Tsunami
Achieved :
- This is a unique care project for children affected by tsunami
- Worked at 40 villages at 2 districts Cuddalore and Nagapattinam
- Identified and treated 111 children with post traumatic distress syndrome
- Conducted 2 research and produced documents
COVID Response
Protecting Lives During the Pandemic
Achieved :
- Distributed 46 pulse oximeter and 22 oxygen concentrator [10 liters] to PHC at Tiruvallur district.
- Conducted research on the impact of covid and research paper disseminated
- Through public awareness reached 32900
- Interacted with 8253 families and reached 24248 adults and 8652 children
- Referred 1961 persons with Covid symptoms for testing of which 680 got tested and 98 reported positive.
- Distributed 9000 Kabasura Kudineer packets, 33000 masks, 5500 sanitizers.
Environmental Response – Chennai Flood
Resilience and Recovery for Vulnerable Families
Achieved :
- Reached 5605 families and more than 20,000 people of which 7600 were children. All families were provided materials worth 20,000/- to each family
- Created Child Friendly spaces and reached 937 children.
- Trained 20 girls on fashion tailoring through national institute of fashion design
- Trained 20 girls on home nursing
- 478 women supported with income generation program
- 20 schools were provided new WASH facilities
- 10 schools at Tiruvallur district were provided school safety program and reached 2652 children.
- Through the Nutrition support program 202 Nutritional demo were done reaching 18814 people in total [7069 directly & 11745 indirectly].
TN Family Continuum Care
Extending Lifelong Care to PLHA Families
Achieved :
- CHES was main site NGO and was catering to 3 districts – Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram
- Reached more than 1500 PLHA families
Thai Seyee Nalam
Protecting Mothers, Saving Futures
Achieved :
- Initiated the PPTCT project called ‘Thai Sayee Nalam’ and started to work with IOG, Chennai
- Served 41461 Antenatal Women who were referred to ICTC. Of the 41461 only 34897 were willing for HIV screening test and got them tested of which CHES identified 288 new HIV positive Antenatal women for providing PPTCT services.
Camp Rainbow
Serious Fun and Healing for HIV-Positive Children
Achieved :
- CAMP RAINBOW is a collaborative effort of CHES, YRG CARE and SERIOUSFUN CHILDREN’S NETWORK, US
- Camp Rainbow-Chennai consisted of two, five-day residential camp sessions
- Camp Rainbow is a unique opportunity for children living with HIV who are aware of their HIV status to participate in HIV education and traditional camp activities aimed at enhancing campers’ adherence to treatment and medication, it focuses on providing children with serious fun.
- This camp has been specially designed to take utmost personal care of each deprived child in a more meaningful way. The duration of the camp is 5days and we hold 40 children per camp.
- A total of 472 children participated in the program who were in the criteria
- 120 staff/Students/Volunteers trained for camp rainbow
- 25 follow up program conducted and 375 children participated in this follow up program
Cradle Baby Scheme
A Safe Beginning for Abandoned and Vulnerable Infants
Achieved :
- Cradle unit is a division of Anandha Illam services where children less than 6 years are managed and it includes both gender and children infected largely and sometimes children affected.
Thooli – ATMA
Empowering Children Through Education and Self-Care
Achieved :
- Reached 421 children
- 387 are in to schools
- 76 children trained on self care based on Kutiyn Nalam manual.
Vidiyalai Thedi
Journey Toward Home and Hope for Vulnerable Boys
- A secondary data analysis was done for period 2009- 2011
- For a conceptual understanding on project vs children lives a Road Map study was undertaken
- 9265 boys were admitted over the entire project period 2012 to 2019 of whom intake was taken for 8169 boys.
- 2711 came from TN, 748 from Bihar, 367 from Andhra Pradesh, 317 from UP and 237 from West Bengal.
- Project team on their efforts reunited 5331 children of which 4695 in to families, 636 transferred to other places to link with families, and 988 were retained at JJ homes as homes were not conducive for the child.
- Brought 3 documents – one on research and other two on policy issues.
HCL Micronutrition – Breaking the Resilience
From Nutrition to Holistic Care for Vulnerable Children
Achieved :
- This project started as just a micronutrient project but now has scaled to a comprehensive project
- Each year 85 children are supported
- The project has reached 1025 children but may not be a true cumulative over years.
Kanmanighali
Healing and Hope for Girls in Government Care
Achieved :
- At the only Government home for Girls run at Kellys Chennai
- Reached 558 girls who were admitted through Child Welfare Committee
- Majority of girls belonged to Tamilnadu, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Pondicherry and West Bengal
- Case intake and psychosocial support were provided to all
